Corbett Wildlife Sanctuary, the first and one of the finest national parks of India, is located in the foothills of the majestic Himalayas in Uttranchal, India. Picturesquely spread over an area of about 200 square miles amidst lush green Sal forests and magnificent series of ridges running parallel to the valley, the Sanctuary is famous for its scenic beauty. The beautiful park was developed and nurtured by Late Jim Corbett in the year 1936. Home to varied plants and wildlife, the park is famous for its large population of Royal Bengal Tigers and Asiatic Elephants. The scenic park also has the privilege of being the first national park India to come under the famous Project Tiger in the year 1973. Project Tiger was lunched to protect the diminishing tiger population in the country in 1973.
Wildlife in Corbett National Park
The picturesque Corbett National Park is home to a wide variety of wildlife and plants. The park shelters about 50 mammal species, 580 bird species, 25 reptile species and 110 tree species. The major attractions of the Park are the famous Royal Bengal Tigers and Asiatic Elephants. It provides ideal environmental conditions for growth and survival of Tigers and its prey such as Deer and Wild Boar. Other important wildlife in Corbett National Park include Leopards, Sloth Bear, Jungle Cat, Hedgehog, Fishing Cat, Himalayan Black Bear, Dole or Wild Dog, Jackal, Himalayan Palm Civet, Indian Gray Mongoose, Common Otter, Goat Antelopes, Langurs, Indian Pangolin, Indian Gray Mongoose, fish-eating Crocodiles and a wide variety of insects. Besides, the park also shelters a large number of exotic and colorful birds entertaining the guest with their sweet songs.
Major Attractions
Wildlife Viewing: Elephant or a Jeep safari is the best way to explore the rich flora and fauna of the park. The savannah grassland locally known as maidan is a favorite with Chital, Sambar and other deer species enough to attract the majestic Tigers providing good opportunities to visitors to spot a tiger in his own natural habitat.
Jeep safari in Corbett: Jeeps Safari is the hot favorite with wildlife lovers visiting the Corbett National Park. It is the safest and the most convenient way to explore the lush green jungles and wildlife. Don't be surprised if a tiger or a leopard comes face to face with you.
The park also houses a Visitor Centre and Museum displaying the exhibits and models relating to the history and biodiversity of Corbett. Besides, it has several watchtowers and machans at Dhikala, Phulai and Jhirna that provide an excellent platform for viewing the wildlife and offer a breathtaking view of the exceptionally beautiful surroundings of the park.
Do's and Don'ts in the Park
Maintain a safe distance from wild animals and keep their life undisturbed.
Don't carry a gun or a pistol. Feel free to shoot snaps with a camera.
Enjoy an elephant and jeep safari but avoid disturbing the wildlife.
Remain quiet, and don't wear bright colors or strong perfumes.
Never forget to bring your binoculars.
Note: The Corbett national park remains closed from June 16 and November 14, as the monsoons flood the riverbeds and cut the road links. The best visiting season of Corbett is from November 15 to June 15.
